Has Monkey Junction ever had a Kmart?

Yes. Kmart No. 3607 operated at 5309 Carolina Beach Road, Wilmington [Map this] (where the Lowes Foods store is now) for about a decade from the mid-1980s until 1995.

The store closed on Feb. 12, 1995, as part of a major restructuring by Kmart, leading to the closing of 110 stores in 30 states and the laying off of more than 6,000 employees. Locally, 80 Kmart workers lost their jobs.

Wilmington’s other Kmart, at 815 S. College Road, Wilmington [Map this], was actually expanded as part of the move. It is still operating.
