Why are the signs for our communities disappearing from main roadways in Brunswick County?

The mystery of where signs on U.S. 17 in Brunswick County are going might never be solved. But they are not going to be replaced.

The two signs – one at the intersection of Goodman Road pointing to the unincorporated community of Springhill, the other at Snowfield Road pointing to Snowfield – were maintained by the N.C. Department of Transportation.

But the N.C. DOT did not remove the signs, nor did Brunswick County’s code enforcement office.

“If it was someone else, it was someone who had no business touching them,” said Miquel Keur of the code enforcement office.

N.C. DOT spokeswoman Jennifer Garifo said because the signs were so old, the department does not have a record of when they were posted.

But because they did not have a mileage count or any other information on them, they will not be replaced, she said.

“They don’t provide any information to the traveling public,” Garifo said.

Until the StarNews called to ask about the signs, the N.C. DOT did not have a record of them being missing.

“There are a limited number of people working in the area and so many streets, so we really depend on people reporting missing signs,” Garifo said.
