Does a person have to have a Social Security number to get a N.C. driver’s license or state ID card?

Jim Ware

The N.C. Department of Motor Vehicles requires applicants for drivers’ licenses or state ID cards to provide a valid Social Security card along with:

“Proof of age and identity, which includes providing your full name (including your middle name or initial) and date of birth. You will need a total of two documents from this category, one of which must show your date of birth,” according to the N.C. DMV website.

The website also says:

  • If you are not eligible for a Social Security card, you must provide documentation issued by the U.S. government indicating legal presence.
  • If you have just recently moved to North Carolina and are applying for your original North Carolina driver’s license, your valid, unexpired “out-of-state” driver license with photo counts as one form of identification.
  • See the following link for more specific documentation, Driver’s Handbook.
