Was there ever an Air National Guard unit stationed at Wilmington?

No, according to tht National Guard’s public affairs office in Raleigh.

Wilmington has long been home to a large and active Civil Air Patrol contingent.

Retired Piedmont Airlines pilot Randy Allen recalls that components of a regular Air Force fighter squadron, from Langley Air Force Base near Norfolk, Va., were posted at the Wilmington airport for most of the 1960s. The unit flew F-101 “Voodoo” two-seater jet fighters and later F-106 Delta Darts.

Its aircraft were based in four hangars near the Kerr Avenue side of the airport (still visible on the airport grounds). These would  periodically be scrambled to intercept and escort Soviet TU-95 “Bear” bombers, which flew over-the-Arctic missions from Russia to Cuba along the Atlantic Coast, cruising just outside U.S. air space.

According to Allen, the fighters were moved from the airport in the early 1970s.

As for Langley Field VA it is in the Tidewater area of Virginia (Newport News VA). No where near Washington.
    Keep up the great work.
