Is a public, Olympic-size pool being built in the Hampstead area off of U.S. 17?

This answer was updated March 3, 2011.

Plans for a proposed community pool and recreation complex in Hampstead are still in the works, according to the project’s developer.

“We’re moving along slowly,” said Jeff Beaudoin, who first presented the idea to the Pender County’s Planning board back in 2009. He said, however, there’s nothing new to report since last year, but efforts and plans are still being made to make the complex a reality.

The concept for the community aquatic lifestyle center, with two pools and a multipurpose facility on 28.55 acres on the west side of Country Club Drive, about 600 feet south of Avila Drive, was approved by the board in 2009. A revised master plan for the project was approved by the board in 2010, according to Kyle Breuer, the county’s planning director.

The project is expected to be built in stages, and the approved master plan included two phases — one with modular building for cultural and recreational uses with office space and the second phase with an event pavilion. Aquatic facilities, including a possible outdoor Olympic-size pool, are expected to come in one of the later phases of the project after Phase 1 and Phase 2.

Breuer is anticipating the planning board will receive another plan that will enable the project to move forward.

“They’re going to be bringing us a preliminary plan for the project,” Breuer said, adding that he was uncertain about the developer’s time frame. “The preliminary plan will present more detailed engineering-type drawings. We’ll look at it and then approve it.”

Breuer also said a building permit has not yet been obtained for the proposed project.

The proposed complex is planned to allow for various activities from martial arts, swimming classes, sports and other events for families and senior residents.

The approval of the master plan is valid through Dec. 31, 2011.
