You’ve probably noticed the roadwork and land clearing going on next to the grocery store. This is all part of the commercial area at Waterford, a large residential community off U.S. 17 in Leland. It started with the stores at the entrance to the homes and expanded to where the Harris Teeter is now. The latest addition is going to be a large regional collections center and retail store for then nonprofit Goodwill Industries. “They like being close to a Harris Teeter because most of their donating clientele would be the same subsection as a Harris Teeter shopper,” said Bert Exum, developer of Waterford, which partly donated and partly sold the land to Goodwill. He said the organization is still uncertain about when they will begin construction.
Three outparcels and 26 internal acres are available for sale or possibly a build-to-suit lease, but none of it is under contract now, Exum added. Waterford received a permit to put a “right-in, right-out” on U.S. 17 by the planned Goodwill center to make it easier to turn in and out and “take the pressure off the main entrance into Waterford and create circulation in the commercial village,” he said.
