At a recent Wilmington City Council meeting, Councilman Jim Quinn deemed the stretch of highway between Leland and the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge an “abomination, so far as trash and the lack of landscaping and that kind of thing.”
“That is an entrance to the city, and it does look bad,” Quinn said.
Few would disagree. Quinn asked city staff members to find out who is supposed to maintain that area.
Mike Kozlosky, executive director of the Wilmington Metropolitan Planning Organization, said in early October that the city is working with the N.C. Department of Transportation to evaluate landscaping possibilities.
But it’s unclear where the money would come from, if anywhere. Allen Pope, DOT division engineer, said the DOT doesn’t have the cash to maintain landscaping there “without the sacrifice of something else.”
Pope said the DOT and city are in “initial conversations” to try to figure out a way to clean it up.
