Accessible only by a private, guarded, swing bridge across the Intracoastal Waterway (that you must have an invitation to cross) or by boat, Figure Eight Island is a 1,300-acre island north of Wrightsville Beach with more than 5 miles of beach. Unless you count the yacht club, marina, tennis courts and boat ramp, there are no commercial developments on the island, which has close to 500 of the area’s most expensive homes and no condominiums. It has summer homes, vacation rentals and some full-time residents. Notable names who have vacationed there include politicians Al Gore and John Edwards.
To get to Figure Eight Island from Wilmington, take U.S. 17 North (Market Street) to Porters Neck Road, make a right and then another right on Edgewater Club Road, which eventually takes you to the bridge. The last intersection before the bridge is Edgewater Club and Avenel drives, Wilmington [Map this].
Some boaters pull up to the shore on the north end of the island in the Green Channel area near Rich Inlet and walk along the sandy beach. Those who do should be respectful and not venture off the shore into private lots.
