Apartments at Jervay Communities, the public housing complex off Dawson Street, are in high demand.
Jervay’s current occupancy rate is about 98 percent full, said Brendella Blanks, the site manager at Jervay Communities. And so far there are four waiting lists for places at Jervay. As of Sept. 28, 2009, there are about 90 people waiting for a one-bedroom apartment, another 90 waiting for a two-bedroom apartment, about 70 for three bedrooms and about 20 for the senior citizen development called Sunset South for residents aged 62 and older.
To apply, you have to show a Social Security card, submit to a criminal background check and verify income. Though the income rate is sliding to be able to live in the various 1-, 2- or 3-bedroom apartments, there is a $40,000 cap for cumulative household (or in this case, apartment) income.
