Whatever happened to Mia’s Italian Ice that used to be downtown?

Businesses come and go downtown, and Mia’s Italian Ice was one that didn’t stick around too long. It operated at 248 N. Front St., Wilmington [Map this], across from The Soapbox, from March 2007 to December 2007.

“Mia’s was a nice little place with some really good Italian ice and desserts,” said Joseph Carney, one of the owners of the building and the managing partner. “We were sorry to see them go, as were their many customers. …I think they were just undercapitalized, the cause of many small businesses’ demise. They just didn’t have enough money to go through the slower winter months and build up the business in the warm months to make it through. It often takes four to five years to become profitable in a small business. That’s the common advice from business consultants.”

Carney suggests consulting the Small Business Administration for free advice before embarking on an entrepreneurial endeavor so you know what all the risks are. SCORE is another good resource for those thinking of starting a small business.
