Put simply, the City of Wilmington is spending $4.6 million on construction to widen a two-mile stretch of Independence Boulevard between Shipyard Boulevard and Carolina Beach Road to four lanes.
But the project is more than just that, according to information on the city Web site.
It also includes:
– A southbound bicycle lane.
– An off-road, multi-use path between Museum Drive and Croquet Drive (part of the Cross-City Trail project).
– Pedestrian crossings at Independence Boulevard and South 17th Street.
– The extension of Museum Drive to Independence Boulevard.
The project is partially funded by the 2006 Transportation Bond approved by voters. The widening project, according to the city, will provide for another north/south route through the city as traffic increases in the future, particularly if the Cape Fear Skyway Bridge is constructed.
