Q. Do any photo’s and or stories of Wacky Golf exist (on South College Road at Market street)

Q. What was the name and history behind the Putt Putt golf course where MarketPlace Mall now stands?

A. The course wasn’t a Putt Putt location, but was called Wacky Golf.

Wacky Golf was a very popular family park during the 1970s and early ’80s.

In addition to the Wacky Golf Course, with it’s bright colorful animals, there was a huge yellow water slide, a par 3 golf course, a driving range, and the skateboard park Double Tough. A huge gorilla welcomed you into the park.

It was located on College Road by the Market Street overpass when they were both two-lane roads, where MarketPlace Mall — or the New Hanover County Government Center — is now.

What started out as a large fun park wound up overgrown with glimpses of the attractions through the weeds. The colorful animals went to Jubilee Park at Carolina Beach. A StarNews article dated July 14, 1984, announced that the MarketPlace Mall would be built on the Wacky Golf site.

MyReporter was unable to locate a photograph of the Wacky Golf. If any readers can help or want to share memories of the course, let us know in the Comments section below.

I occasionally played the par-3 course with friends.
The only hole-in-one I ever posted came on a hole there. But I have to admit that I miss-hit the shot and it rolled all the way from tee to green and into the hole.
