There were two drive-in theaters on Carolina Beach Road. Where were they?

Q. Back in the 1960s, there were two drive-in theaters on Carolina Beach Road. One was the Star Way, where the Star Way Flea Market is today. The other was, I think the Sky Way, and was located nearby on the opposite side of the road. Where was the second one and what is located on the site now?

A.  The Starway Drive-In Theatre was in business from 1952 until 1984. Opened by Sterling Gossett Theatres, it had a capacity for 700. Located at 2346 Carolina Beach Rd., it is now the home of the Starway Flea Market. In 1996 the drive was going to be reopened, but plans were scrapped after the City Council voted 5-1 not to allow the theater to operate past 11 p.m. Councilman Charlie Rivenbark cast the only dissenting vote.

The Skyline Drive-In was almost directly across the street from the Starway. Owned by Stewart and Everett it was in operation from the early 1950’s until 1985 and had a capacity for 300 cars. Showing triple-X rated movies, the screen was turned away from Carolina Beach Rd to make sure the movies couldn’t be seen by the cars going by. It was located where Medical Center Drive runs into Carolina Beach Road.

I wonder if there is anyway to start another drive in? It is so much fun. I think the clostest one is near Atlanta… The one in Durham closed about 4-6 years ago…
