Q. What is the large pipe placed along Burnt Mill Creek between Market Street and Princess Place Drive? How long will it be there?

A. The Cape Fear Public Utility Authority and its contractor are conducting sewer rehabilitation work on 42 manholes along the 36-inch Burnt Mill Creek gravity sewer outfall, according to authority spokesperson Mike McGill. The project starts near Forrest Hills School and ends at Shirley Drive.

“The process for rehabilitating the manholes includes pressure washing the inside of the manholes and installing a sewer gas-resistant coating into the manhole,” McGill said. “In order to perform this work, a temporary bypass line (the black rubber pipe) is required to remove the wastewater from the existing pipe and move it beyond the project area where it is put back into the sewer system.”

The pipe is a temporary measure that CFPUA expects to be in place between 30 and 45 days.
