Q. Why hasn’t the fire hydrant in front of the Brightmore complex on 41st Street been repaired?  It has been out of service for more than two months and I would think that it is a big safety issue.

A. The Cape Fear Public Utility Authority is tasked with repairing fire hydrants that are out of service.

Mike McGill, a CFPUA spokesman, said the authority first alerted to the hydrant issue when contacted with this MyReporter question

“It appears a car hit the hydrant and another entity, police or fire, bagged the hydrant but did NOT contact us,” McGill wrote in an email. “Obviously, the hydrant was shut off, which means if we’re not told of the damage, we have no way of knowing it’s out of service unless we happen to come across it,” he said.

McGill wanted to allay the safety concerns about the hydrant being offline. A map of the area shows there are 13 other hydrants nearby.

“Because they have significant access to fire flow, this hydrant has a lower priority for repair,” McGill said. “We completely understand the concern from the person submitting the question. However, until it is repaired, the customer should take comfort in knowing there is more than enough access to fire flow in close proximity to their property.”
