Q. Why has the handicapped parking spaces on Market Street near Riverwalk been replaced with government parking only? Several other handicapped spaces have also been replaced with taxi-only parking. Why would the city of Wilmington remove handicapped parking spaces?
A. We posed the question to Betty Gurganus, the parking manager for the city of Wilmington.
Gurganus said there were no designated handicapped parking spaces on that section of Front Street or on Market Street by the Riverwalk. Improved signs were installed at the foot of Market Street to alert drivers of the parking restrictions around the federal courthouse, she said.
On Front Street, markings were repainted to delineate parking restrictions after midnight, when some spaces become taxi stands.
“The parking restrictions have been in place for several years,” she said.
