New Hanover County is currently discharging wastewater from the county landfill, called landfill leachate, into a manhole at Ogden Park, according to county officials and the Cape Fear Public Utility Authority.

The county and its contractor SR&R Environmental were permitted by CFPUA to start discharging landfill leachate into a manhole in the vicinity of Ogden Park on July 29, said CFPUA spokesman Mike McGill.

“SR&R has years of experience in hazardous waste handling and biohazard waste remediation and is a fully-qualified hazardous waste first responder,” McGill said.

New Hanover County Environmental Director Joe Suleyman said that the summer’s heavy rainfall meant that the county needed to discharge some of the wastewater to ensure capacity at the landfill site for additional storms.

“We also wanted to gain extra storage capacity during the peak hurricane season,” Suleyman said.

The location near Ogden Park was selected to ensure that there is adequate hydraulic capacity and to lessen the impact at the wastewater treatment plant, according to McGill.

“CFPUA Compliance staff has reviewed analytical data to ensure that the waste is compatible with CFPUA’s wastewater collection and treatment system. Compliance officers are conducting ongoing monitoring for the duration of the project, which is expected to last several months,” McGill said.

Customers can call into CFPUA’s Community Compliance office at 332-6558 or email them at community.compliance@cfpua.org for additional information.
