Q. What happened to S&G Prestress Concrete Co., located on Burnett Boulevard? For years, workers made huge concrete beams for bridges, but the facility has been deserted the last few months.

A. S&G Prestress Concrete is a subsidiary of Vulcan Materials Co., based in Birmingham, Ala.

Matthew Arbuckle, a Vulcan Materials, said S&G Prestress was closed in 2012 because “It lost the competitive advantage it once held and is no longer a profitable enterprise.”

“This is due to a number of reasons including the recession, a lack of infrastructure funding in the market area, and changes in the industry,” Arbuckle said.

The site at 2295 Burnette Blvd. “has been mothballed and we are looking for a buyer for the real estate,” he said. “Most of the production assets have been liquidated at this time,” Arbuckle added.
