Why is that large building at Mayfaire unoccupied?

Wayne Faulkner

Q. There is a large unoccupied building about two blocks from Ruby Tuesday in Mayfaire off of Military Cutoff Road, which I have noted for a long time. Could you tell me what the building was used for and why it is vacant? It is behind the Mayfaire office building.

A. The building, which is owned by office developers Lincoln Harris of Raleigh, was leased by the former Wachovia Bank for its mortgage operations here, said Sue Rice, director of operations for Mayfaire Town Center. It was the first parcel sold by Mayfaire developers, she added.

But successor bank Wells Fargo closed the operation in 2011 with the loss of 259 jobs. Now Wells Fargo is trying to sublet space in the vacant building, according to commercial real estate brokers here.
