Q. Have New Hanover County Schools EOG and EOC scores in high schools decreased since the state mandated a school start date of Aug. 25 or later?

A. The state mandated that public schools start after Aug. 25 in 2004. New Hanover County Schools’ end-of-grade tests and end-of-course tests saw a significant decrease in the 2006-07 school year.

That decrease is likely due to a new curriculum being rolled out that year rather than the later start date. The state updates its curriculum about every five years, according to the state Department of Public Instruction, and the more rigorous standards often result in lower test scores.
