Q. Can you tell me the history on this address: 4017 Holly Shelter Rd., Castle Hayne [Map this]? I know it was built in 1939, but was it the first house built in the area, or any other information would be helpful.

A. The house at 4017 Holly Shelter Road was indeed built in 1939, according to New Hanover County tax records.

The nearly five-acre property is zoned O&I — Office and Institution. Its land use code is 10-1 — Farm/Residence.

The land value is assessed at $37,200, according to current county tax records. The value of the buildings on the property is assessed at $33,200.

The appraised market value of the property is $70,400, according to county tax records.

The owner of the property is listed as the Federal National Mortgage Association, of Dallas.

Bank of America paid $180,267 at public auction of the property on Sept. 18.2012, an assigned it to the Federal National Mortgage Association, according to a deed on record with the Register of Deeds office.

The brick veneer house has a living area of 1,526 square feet, three bedrooms, two full bathrooms and central heat with air conditioning, according to county records.

An addition built in 1940 totals 1,084 square feet. A garage addition was built in 1970.

The property has changed hands at least 10 times since August 1977. The Federal National Mortgage Association assumed ownership from Thomas A. James in November 2012, according to county records.

The property’s value has steadily increased over the years. It sold for $7,500 in August 1977, $13,000 in October 1983, $21,000 in June 1988 and $140,000 in December 2005, according to county records.
