Sixteen troopers and two sergeants – so 18 total N.C. highway patrol personnel – are assigned to Brunswick County, said First. Sgt. Troy Pope.

Pope oversees the Wilmington-based office of the N.C. Highway Patrol, which enforces laws on highways in New Hanover and Brunswick counties.

Seventeen troopers and two sergeants – 19 total – are assigned to New Hanover County.

However, Pope said he has two vacant positions in Brunswick County and three vacant positions in New Hanover County, plus one more trooper currently assigned to the governor’s detail. So he is currently six troopers short.

The highway patrol training academy is about to graduate a class that may help fill some of those openings.
