Why has the fire hydrant at Cathay Road and Presidio Drive been turned on hours daily since last year?

The fire hydrant at Cathay Road and Presidio Drive is at the end of a line and has an automatic flusher on it, according to Cape Fear Public Utility Authority spokesperson Mike McGill.

The flusher is programmed to open daily to turn over the water, which help ensure the quality of the water.

“We use automatic flushers in cases where the usage alone is not enough to keep the water turned over. We have to flush to keep the chlorine residual at safe levels,” McGill said. “If the water is not turned over, the disinfectant levels drop below compliance levels as set by our state regulators.”

CFPUA has around 25 automatic flushers that are used daily in the system. Other locations are visited and flushed manually on a daily basis for this same reason.
