Q. Where in Wilmington can I go to drop off aluminum cans to sell for cash? I have about 300 cans that I need to get rid of and what is the going rate? Is it by can or by weight? Any info would be much appreciated.
A. It’s by weight. Cans are paid for by the pound. There is a lengthy list on yellowpages.com.
We called three.
Southern Metals Recycling Inc. (www.southernmetals.com) has two locations listed below. It’s a fourth-generation family run business that started in the 1920s in New York by father, Max Alper and sons, George and Seymour Alper. Today it’s run by grandsons Jonathon and Mark Alper and great-grandson, Jeremy Alper.
Their pay-out rates for cans per pound vary daily, says Jeremy. Currently they are offering anywhere from 45 to 50 cents per pound.
Locations are:
- 2923 U.S. 421 North, 910-762-2646. Open 8 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-noon Saturday, closed Sunday.
- 13 Wright St., 910-762-9619. Open 8 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. Monday-Friday, closed weekends.

Horton Iron & Metal Co. Inc. (www.hortoniron.com), is near Eagle Island Produce. Horton Iron pays 49 cents per pound.

New to the scene is All Metal Recycling of Wilmington on Castle Hayne Road, which opened Feb. 1. They say they’ll match any price in town.
All Metal Recycling & Recovery, 1501 Marstellar St., open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday-Saturday, 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday.
