Founding member of the CRABS metal detecting club — it stands for Carolina Relic and Beach Hunting Society — Hermit Diggs, says there are plenty of places to hunt for treasure in Wilmington.

“The best places to hunt are beaches and schoolyards,” Diggs said. “Woods are also a good location, but most are private property and you have to make sure you always have permission.”

Diggs explained that it is very important to follow the “metal detecting code” by making sure to ask for permission before detecting, cover your holes, remove trash and always return marked objects.

If you’re a new detectist, Diggs encourages you to join a club such as CRABS or to find someone with experience to tag along with.

“As for the hot spots for detecting, that’s kind of a secret,” says Diggs. “Like your favorite fishing hole, you have to seek them out on your own or gain the trust of a veteran.”
