The city does not provide gas service. It is done by Piedmont Natural Gas, which has a franchise for the Wilmington area.
The utility has residential customers locally, but service is not available everywhere, according to Michael Durham, a spokesman for Charlotte-based Piedmont.
“We’ve grown as fast as we can based on interest,” he said. “We will do an entire neighborhood if there is the demand.”
Currently, Piedmont has 13,800 residential customers in its Wilmington service area, comprising New Hanover, Brunswick, Pender and Columbus counties, according to Dennis Urgento, Piedmont operations manager.
There are 2,300 commercial and 31 large industrial customers, he said.

Just for the record, some of us in the City do not want natural gas lines in our neighborhoods. After seeing a home explode from a gas leak I’ve never wanted gas.
