Why is the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office assigning a vehicle to sit all day next at an industrial entrance on U.S. 421 near the Eagle Island Fish Market. Every day for the past week, there has been a manned sheriff’s vehicle with lights flashing sitting next to the entrance. No other industrial entrance on 421 gets this service. Thanks.
A. We posed this question to Sgt. Jerry Brewer, a spokesman for the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office. Here’s what he said:
“The Sheriff’s Office contracts out Deputies for certain duties. Companies are constantly hiring the Sheriff’s Office to assist with traffic, security and other law enforcement duties. The companies pay a contract fee to the Sheriff’s Office for the Deputy. The contract is filled by a Deputy who is off that day and signs up for the contract.”
Brewer added that such is the case with the company on U.S. 421, which contracted with the sheriff’s office to have a deputy assist with traffic.
