It depends on the lot, as options vary from place to place.
Some tree lots, like the one at Wilmington’s Carolina Farmin’, will run unsold trees through the chipper and use them as mulch. Some of the store’s trees also get taken to its farm in Shallotte and burned, according to Bobby Harris, the store’s director of operations.
In Wilmington, lots can place their trees on the curb for trash pickup; in the county, they can be taken to recycling sites.
