Q. Initially the city of Wilmington said customers who already recycle will receive a new blue recycling cart. Now the website says you need to sign up. Did they run out of blue recycling carts? About 95 percent of my neighborhood recycles and only 4 or 5 have the new canister for recycling. The city said all new recycling carts would be issued by mid-December and I see a lot of the smaller red recycling bins on my way to work and very few of the new blue recycling carts. What’s up?
A. Existing city of Wilmington recycling customers were set to automatically receive the new 95-gallon blue recycling carts unless they called to request a smaller cart.
City contractors have completed delivering carts to most of the initial 17,000 recycling customers, said Dave Bundick, the city’s solid waste superintendent.
But no system is perfect.
“We did miss a few people that should have gotten one,” he said. “We are in the process right now of correcting those.”
If you already are a recycling customer but did not receive a blue bin, call the city at 341-7875. If you want to sign up to get the recycling carts, you can also call 341-7875 to sign up.

I told the delivery people that I was not a recycling customer and they told me that everyone got one and would not take it back. Now I am trying to get someone to pick this large container up with no luck. The people that delivered the containers were not city employees but contracted by the city.
Everyone in my neighborhood got a blue can except for my house. I called the city and asked for one 3 weeks ago after everyone got one but me. Still no blue can. Looks like some people can’t count on the city to provide them with a can. Once they start picking up every two weeks I am going to either have to put my recycling in the green can or become a criminal and acquire a blue one illegitimately.
