Can gas-vehicle motorists be cited for parking in an electric vehicle space at Mayfaire?

Q. In the Mayfaire shopping area behind Pottery Barn, there are two or three spots intended for electric vehicles only and have charging capabilities. There is a sign that is marked “Electric Vehicles Only” but lists no city or county ordnance for which would make that a citable offense. Is that enforceable by any local law enforcement agency?

A. Gasoline-fueled vehicles will not be ticketed or towed for parking in spots earmarked for electric cars, but Mayfaire Town Center management hopes drivers will cooperate in saving charging stations for cars that actually need them.

Sue Rice, Mayfaire’s director of operations, said two charging stations were installed this past spring as part of an agreement with Progress Energy.

The charging stations provide a place for electric cars to park and recharge their batteries. While acknowledging that they have been used only sparingly, Rice said the shopping center wanted to be on the cutting edge of a trend spreading nationwide.

While nonelectric vehicles will not face any financial penalty for parking there, Rice said security might tag the car to remind the driver that the stations are reserved.

“We ask that everybody cooperate with us and leave them available for the folks that do have electric cars,” she said.
