The Satellite Bar and Lounge building at 120 Greenfield St., at the corner of Greenfield and Second streets, has a rich history of neighborhood groceries that served the community.
When Greenfield Street opened between Second and Front streets in 1947, the new building housed the newest and most modern food store in the city, Lee’s Self Service Grocery and Meat Store. The store was owned and managed by Mrs. Elwood M. Lee (Helen Clemmons Lee) from 1948 until 1981. Mrs. Lee was a beloved neighborhood member who ran the market for more than 30 years. She passed away in 2008 at the age of 92.
After 1981 it changed names, owners and merchandise types several times, Haynes Market from 1981 – 1987, Sun Kist 1988 – 1990, Sun Super Market 1993 – 1994, Carolina Meat Market 1995 – 2000, and J & R Mini Market from 2001 until the grocery days ended in 2010.
The historic building now houses the Satellite Bar and Lounge.
