Q. Given our proximity to water, and recent reports of drowning in vehicles that drive into water, how does one escape from a sinking car?
A. To get complete, comprehensive instructions, we highly recommend this wikiHow article: www.wikihow.com/Escape-from-a-Sinking-Car.
1. Remove your seatbelt.
2. Help children
3. Put down a window, or break one if you can’t put it down.
4. Exit the car through the window and swim rapidly toward the surface.
The article does state that you shouldn’t try to open the door. It’ll be impossible until the pressure inside the car equals the pressure outside the car (meaning your car will be full of water). By then, it’s probably too late.
The article goes into much more detail, including why some people believe you shouldn’t remove your seatbelt immediately, how to break the windows and tips for orienting yourself.
