Q. Who is responsible for the area around the recycling center at Blair Elementary School? Every time it rains, there are big mud puddles in front of the bins, making access nearly impossible. Can’t that area be filled in to eliminate the muddy mess?
A. The New Hanover County Environmental Management Recycling Division is responsible for the recycling drop off site at Blair Elementary School.
The division is also responsible for servicing the roll off containers and cleaning up litter and illegally dumped debris dropped off outside of the containers.
Lynn Bestul, a solid waste planner, for New Hanover County, says the division is very aware of the mess the rain causes around the recycling center.
“Realizing the rain puddles were impacting residents using the site, the recycling staff brought in gravel and spread it in the area of the recycling containers,” Bestul said. “This has helped. However, the next step is to have the drainage ditch and culvert cleaned out.”
Bestul and the Recycling Division are looking into what agency is responsible for the drainage ditch and culvert in the area of Blair Elementary School.
