Q. How many employees does the Oak Island ABC have? I am positive that on occasion I have counted four present at one time. That seems an unreasonable number for such a little store (especially one run on tax dollars).
A.Oak Island’s ABC general manager and finance officer, Marian Kay England says the store has a total of six employees at the current time, counting her, and one of which is an assistant working full-time, part of the time in the back office.
On a typical day, yes, England prefers to have four employees at the store — two clerks up front to work the registers and she and her assistant in the back handling all office paperwork.
But many days it’s just three working at the store, and sometimes there are just two, depending on the day of the week.
With a near 10 percent increase in sales this fiscal year totaling $2,116,000.00, she and the assistant are sometimes needed to come up front to also work the registers. In July, ABC’s busiest month of the year, seasonal workers are hired to handle the volume. Only two clerks were on staff Wednesday the day before Thanksgiving this year and sales for that one day were $13, 700.
“That is up from last year. I really could have used three clerks that day. The only time we have three clerks is in the summer time. When you have a $20,000 day, it takes more people,” said England.
Mixed beverage sales for the Oak Island ABC store are at an all time high due to the store now covering all of Oak Island and Bald Head Island. From the $2,116,000.00 made during the fiscal year ending June 12, England says $143,394 was paid to the Town of Oak Island.
Actually, store operations are paid for out of receipts for liquor sales. Of the profits after expenses, 10 percent stays with the store for capital improvement and the rest goes to the town of Oak Island.
ABC stands for Alcohol Beverage Control and ABC stores in North Carolina are controlled by state government. North Carolina is one of only eight states in the US that has state government run liquor retailing establishments or ABC stores. Alabama, Idaho, New Hampshire, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Utah also run liquor retailing stores. States that do not, either permit ABC licensed private stores to sell or contract out management and operations to private firms.
