Q. Why are there no major streets or roads named ‘Azalea’ in Wilmington, the city that’s nationally known for the annual N.C. Azalea Festival?
A. There’s at least one, said intrepid researcher Joseph Sheppard, the New Hanover County Special Collections Librarian.
“Many seasons describe the reasons of the why’s and the tries of naming when by men,” Sheppard waxes, but he practically refers readers to Page 53 of the 2011 Wilmington Polk City Directory, which lists an Azalea Drive in Wilmington.
The street is off of Ruxton Way and not too far from the Friends School of Wilmington.
