Why did they change the name of the Williston Trojans to Tigers?

This answer comes from Rick Holliday, Williston Middle School principal from 1996-98 and now an assistant superintendent for New Hanover County Schools.

Before Williston Senior High School closed its doors in 1968 following integration, the nickname was always Tigers and the colors were maroon and gold.

However, a year later, when Williston opened as a junior high school and later middle school, the nickname became Trojans and the colors were changed to blue and gold.

It remained that way until Ken McLaurin was transferred from Laney High School principal to principal at Williston in 1993.

McLaurin, a Williston High graduate, sought input from the middle school students and all-black high school alum before petitioning the New Hanover County Board of Education to switch back to Tigers to maintain a semblance of the previous all-black high school’s heritage. The board granted the request.

Since Noble Middle School’s colors are maroon and gold, the same as the old Williston High, Williston Middle School’s colors are still blue and gold.
