What does ICE Hold mean in Mug Shots?

Brian Freskos

Q. I have noticed on your Mug Shots recently people with charges that say ICE HOLD. Where are these individuals being picked up at and what is being done with them after landing in jail?

A. The New Hanover County Detention Facility places an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Hold on inmates who can’t show documentation, such as a driver’s license, proving that they are living legally in the United States, said sheriff’s office spokesman Sgt. Jerry Brewer.

Once such a hold is in effect, ICE agents interview the inmate and ultimately decide whether deportation proceedings should be initiated, Brewer said.
