Q: What was the outcome/discussion at Ogden Elementary School on Monday, Sept. 17, regarding pedestrian/bike access around Middle Sound Loop Road?

Three bike/pedestrian projects were discussed at the meeting, and they are all part of the Wilmington/New Hanover Greenway plan.

New Hanover County Planning & Inspections Director Chris O’Keefe said, “At the Sept. 17th meeting, we talked about three Middle Sound bike/ped projects. We also talked a little bit about things that are included in the current draft of the Wilmington/New Hanover County Greenway plan. The plan identifies adding a bike path around Middle Sound Loop Road as one of its objectives.”

According to O’Keefe, among the projects talked about were adding a multi-use path, connecting Ogden Elementary School to Red Cedar Road; adding bike lanes to Covil Farms Road, connecting the Middle Sound area to the Cross City Trail, and adding a range of bicycle facilities, which would connect Ogden Elementary School to Bayshore and Marsh Oaks.

The Wilmington/New Hanover County Greenway is envisioned by planners to provide a framework for local governments and project partners to establish a comprehensive network of greenways.

Greenways are vegetated corridors of land designed to connect people and places, and often include trails for walking and bicycling. Such natural areas provide opportunities for multi-modal transportation and outdoor recreation.

In other cities where greenways have been employed, they have been found to protect natural habitats, improve water quality and reduce the impacts of flooding in floodplain areas.
