Why did the Parks Department remove picnic tables from River Side Park in Castle Hayne?

Q. Why did the Parks Department take up most of the picnic tables people took their lunches on at River Side Park in Castle Hayne, and are they going to put them back?

A. River Side Park in Castle Hayne had two picnic benches by the beach area, and four picnic tables in a separate area south of the beach. The tables have been removed due to vandalism concerns.

Andy Johnson, New Hanover County parks operations manager, said that tops were being stolen for scrap metal.

The department is currently looking at different styles of picnic tables that can’t be taken apart.

“We are looking at putting picnic tables back where we wouldn’t have the vandalism concerns that we have now,” said Johnson. The picnic tables should be replaced within the next month.
