Q. How much do starting teachers make in New Hanover County, and first-year firefighters for the Wilmington Fire Department?
A. Statewide, first-year teachers with a bachelor’s degree will make about $30,800 during the 2012-13 school year, according to the state Department of Public Instruction website. That’s a 1.2 percent increase from their salary last year, which was $30,430. As a July StarNews story explained, that’s their first increase in four years, when their salaries were frozen.
Teachers’ salaries are stretched over 10 months instead of 12 months because of summer vacations.
First-year firefighters in the Wilmington Fire Department have a starting salary of $28,081, according to David Hines, public information officer for the fire department.
