Where are the dance clubs?

Brian Bugton and Rachel Kolb swing dance at a downtown club.

Q. My husband and I love to dance. Where in Wilmington is there a dance club (not ballroom dancing).

A. The Cape Fear region has a few options for those who like to shake their tail feathers.

Most of Wilmington’s dance clubs are downtown and feature different DJs, depending on the night.

At The Reel Café at 100 S. Front St., patrons can dance on the bar’s roof top on Saturdays during the summers. DJs typically spin Top 40 selections, 80s hits, and some rock. The bar also projects music videos, films and other shorts on a wall above the dance floor. Details: http://www.reelcafe.net/.

Level 5 at City Stage at 21 N. Front St. is a rooftop bar that features heaters and removable plastic walls, so bar patrons can dance all year round.

Ibiza, a largely gay club at 118 Market St., bills itself as an ‘alternative dance club.’ Straight female women have been heard to say that they prefer to go to Ibiza to dance because they don’t have to worry about getting hit on quite as much. Details: http://www.ibizawilmington.com/.

The dance beat is in full force at Pravda and Sputnik, a multi-level nightclub at 23 North Front Street. Pravda was voted “Best Dance Club” in 2011 and 2012 by Encore Magazine readers. The high-energy club attracts college students and military service men and women and serves up a booming sound system and a state of the art light show. DJ’s keep the crowd moving to a lively mix of Top 40, electronic dance Music, and Hip Hop. Detals at http://wilmingtonnightclubs.com/.  Similar venues include Charley Brownz, at 21 S. Front St.; Goodfellas, at 106 Market St.; and The Liquid Room at 23 Market St.

If you want to dance to live music, the Soapbox Laundro Lounge at 255 N. Front St. features local and national acts and is among Wilmington’s largest music venues. Satellite Bar and Lounge at 120 Greenfield St. also hosts lots of live bands.

On the weekends during the summer, Red Dog’s at 5 N. Lumina Ave. at Wrightsville Beach is a hot-spot for beach-goers, vacationers and city folk who want to top off their night at the beach with a dance session. The well-known beach bar typically caters to a young crowd a features loud, driving music.

There are, of course, folks who want to avoid being crushed by a sea of college students on the hunt for their next hook-up. Those who crave more structured — but sexy – dance styles can learn Salsa, Cumbia and other Latino-style dance moves from instructors at Wilmington Latin Dance. The group offers classes for beginners and more advanced dancers at the BFAB Dance Studio at 5629 Oleander Drive, suite 106.

A tip for all the guys out there looking to woo that special someone (or get out of the dog house): The group also provide free introduction Salsa lessons periodically on Tuesday nights at King Neptune at 11 N. Lumina Avenue, Wrightsville Beach [Map this]. For more information about Wilmington Latin Dance, visit: http://www.wilmingtonlatindance.com/
