Q. How much does the population of the three county area increase during Fourth of July week due to the number of tourists in the area?

A. The N.C. Department of Commerce, which oversees tourism for the state, does not track specific visitation numbers by county or by holiday.

It does keep annual statistics on economic impact of tourism, number of jobs created by the tourism industry and revenue generated by county. You can view this information here.

In addition, the New Hanover County Tourism Development Authority provides some information about visitors. You can view the press release with the 2011 numbers by clicking here.

Meanwhile, the organizers of the N.C. Fourth of July Festival in Southport estimate that between 40,000 and 50,000 people attend each year.
