Why is the electronic sign on U.S. 74/76 so inconsistent as to the status of the Cape Fear bridge?

Q1. Why is the electronic sign on Highway 74 heading towards the Cape Fear Bridge updated so inconsistently as to the status of the bridge? Frequently, when the bridge is closed to highway traffic because of a ship passing, and more recently, for no apparent reason at all, the sign will either be blank or in a few cases actually say “Cape Fear bridge open to highway traffic”. It would be nice to know so you could get on Highway 421 before you pass that fateful point.

A. “We have inspected our equipment have not found any problems with the signs functioning properly,” said Katherine E. Hite, N.C. Department of Transportation Division 3 traffic engineer.

Hite said the bridge tenders and her staff use the sign to display messages, “and it is possible that miscommunications regarding the usage of the sign have caused inconsistent information to be displayed.”

“We will take note of these inconsistencies and strive to reduce confusion in the future. Thank you for bringing this to our attention!” Hite said.
