Why does the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office provide escorts for motorcades?

Q. At 11:45 a.m. July 22, four Brunswick County sheriff’s deputy cars and two patrol motorcycles stopped traffic between Belville and Leland to escort 25 members of a motorcycle club to Navassa. All the while, traffic was at a complete standstill along the 74/76 causeway between Leland and Wilmington because of heavy traffic that occurs every Saturday between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Why does the motorcycle club get a six-vehicle escort when the officers could have been helping to alleviate this weekly traffic jam?

A. The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office tries to honor escort requests for motorcades because of safety concerns, said Capt. Clint Simpson.

The sheriff’s office has not established criteria for obtaining a sheriff’s escort. Simpson said as long as the office can confirm that there are going to be a significant number of vehicles in the motorcade, deputies will try to accommodate them.

He said the office provides this service to prevent traffic crashes.
