Did anyone else feel some kind of mild shaking around 2:30 am on July 7?

Q. Did anyone else in the local area (Topsail Island/Sneads Ferry) feel some kind of mild shaking around 2:30am on Friday night-Saturday morning, July 7? USGS showed there was a mild earthquake off Puerto Rico around that time, but wouldn’t North Carolina be way too far away to actually feel any effect of that?

A. We suspect the Seneca Guns are to blame for your experience.

These mysterious noises and associated sensations, which seem to be concentrated off the Carolinas, are often compared to distant cannon fire or rolling thunder. Cape Fear residents frequently hear and feel this phenomenon, though there has been no satisfactory scientific explanation to date.

While residents have previously reported rattling windows and shaking houses related to the phenomenon, no serious damage has ever been reported.

Guesses as to the source of the Seneca Guns have ranged from shallow offshore earthquakes and military jets breaking the sound barrier to methane bubbles, UFOs and angry spirits.

MyReporter contacted police departments in Surf City, Topsail Beach and North Topsail Beach. Surf City and North Topsail Beach PDs had no record of such an incident.

Topsail Beach PD failed to respond to calls and emails. An answering machine said that messages would not be returned and advised anyone with an emergency to call 9-1-1. Since this was not an emergency, the StarNews did not call.
