Q. Is there a continuing effort to obtain permits to dredge and repair the boat ramp at Brunswick Park across from the Belville Elementary School?

A. According to Assistant Brunswick County Manager Steve Stone, the county has been trying for several months to get a state permit to dredge the park’s riverfront area. The county has budgeted $250,000 in capital improvement funds for the project and contracted with Land Management Group Inc., and attorney William Raney, both based in Wilmington and experienced in environmental permitting, to assist them in the process.

Because state law prohibits dredging in primary nursery areas, however, whether the county will be granted a permit is still uncertain, Stone said, noting the county tried to obtain a waiver of the prohibition in 2004 and was not successful.

“We’re trying again,” he said. “If we get a permit, there will be an announcement.”
