What is the history of the gas station remains at Fifth and Dawson?

Q. What is the history of the gas station remains on the corner of 5th and Dawson? I believe it is the southwest corner. You can see the building’s foundation and the two concrete pump islands. It appears very old.

A. A 1953 Wilmington City Directory lists the Rouse Brothers Atlantic Service Station, operated by Alton E. and Earl L. Rouse, at 414 #16 Dawson St., said Joseph Sheppard, a library associate at the New Hanover County Public Library.

There are no other listings for the business before 1953, Sheppard said.

The cinderblock 12-foot-by-8-foot building at the site was constructed by 1952 and sat cattycorner to Fifth Avenue and Dawson Street.

The 1955 Sanborn Fire Insurance Map also includes the site, Sheppard said.

I believe that the gas station later became a store selling fishing tackle. The elderly man who ran the store was beaten during a robbery and later died from his injuries. That was maybe late 80′s or early 90′s and the building was demolished some time afterwards.
