Q. As rainfall can vary widely over the area, I wonder if there are other official rain measuring stations in the region other than ILM?

A. The “official” rainfall for Wilmington is measured at the Wilmington airport, said Dave Loewenthal, a weather forecaster for the National Weather Service in Wilmington. The backup rainfall indicator is a manual reading at the National Weather Service office about a mile from the airport.

Some co-op stations gather additional information about rainfall. These are mostly run by volunteers who keep track of information on rain gauges in their backyards.

Loewenthal suggests wunderground.com as a source to find more specific weather readings from different areas, such as Castle Bay, Wade Park or the Ocean Isle Beach pier.

Here’s a link to the “wundermap.”

This link shows the weather stations in southeastern North Carolina. Click on a station to get the current temperature and today’s rainfall at that specific station.
