How come the Heide Trask Bridge at Wrightsville Beach has no sign noting its name?

Q. How come the Heide Trask Bridge over the Intracoastal Waterway at Wrightsville Beach has no sign noting its name? Most area bridges have the Department of Transportation signs with the bridges name, such as the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge, Isabel Holmes Bridge and many others. Just curious.

A. Trevor Carroll, bridge maintenance engineer with the DOT’s Division 3, said he can’t find any evidence of a sign ever existing near the Heide Trask drawbridge over the Intracoastal Waterway at Wrightsville Beach. That doesn’t mean there never was, but the DOT doesn’t have a record of it.

The bridge opened in 1958, and records of that nature weren’t kept then, he said.

But, Carroll said, there is a name plate cast in concrete on the northeast corner of the bridge rail. It reads: “C. Heide Trask Memorial Bridge, Named in honor of C. Heide Trask, Member State Highway Commission” and the dates of Trask’s service.

Not all named bridges have signs, he said, but he didn’t immediately know exactly why.
