Q. Are there ordinances that require you to clean up dog poop on private property? Our neighbors yard stinks!

A. According to New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Jerry Brewer, no ordinance specifically speaks to dog feces, but it can be considered a nuisance and fall under the nuisance law.

Brewer suggests anyone bothered by a neighbor’s trash, abandoned cars, or mounting dog poo should call the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office and a deputy will come out and take a report. That report will be forwarded to an environmental detective who will speak with the complainant and alleged offender.

The offender will be given a time frame to correct the problem, if one exists, and if they don’t meet the deadline, they can incur penalties.

To report a nuisance call the New Hanover County non-emergency dispatch number at 452-6120.
